Blue space is particularly effective in reducing stress compared to green space, and that physical activity, such as walking, in blue spaces is better at restoring mental wellbeing than physical activity in green spaces.

Increase our resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Connect us with others and the natural world. People are more likely to socialize in blue spaces compared with green spaces, allowing them to build social connections and a support network.

Very good efficiency in pollution removal.

WETLAND – ECO FRIENDLY SURFACE WATER ORGANIZE URBAN AND NATURAL WETLANDS:

The climate is changing, the rainwater is heavier and the dry periods between are lasting longer. A lot of rainwater is currently draining through the sewer system, but because it wasn’t built with the increased quantities in mind they do not always work and more frequently overflow.

One way to deal with this is to have our urban greenery function like a sponge. A sponge can moderate these extremes, it can quickly absorb water, hold it temporary and gradually return the water to the subsoil in periods of drought.

Placing wetlands in key places could help the existing sewage system cope with the times to come, stopping it from constantly overflowing, and would be a visual aid to these neighborhoods.

This type of natural intervention can be easily applied in any small area in need of surface water drainage.

1. The attention to the connectivity of the project to the wider urban context was also noted with a particular concern about the poorer neighborhoods. The jury felt that the landscape response was not at the same level as the approach to engagement. The project was not very consistent and eclectic in its response. The jury found merit in the focus on productive gardens and educational community buildings but the level of design response was not convincing.” – appreciation of the Jury

PLUMBUITA RESIDENTIAL AREA

PROBLEMS

85% of the population, of Rroma origin, and a very large share of the inhabitants have no income, no running water and sewage.

Some of the families have members who served prison terms.

Because of the peninsula aspect, it was facilitated the segregation from the neighboring urban fabric.
A gentrification process has begun through the acquisition of properties and the cohabitation of families with higher incomes. This process will continue but it will advance very difficult because a large part of the families who live at the limit of subsistence (the houses marked with a red dot) do not have documents on the land and there are no rightful owners, which makes it almost impossible to invest in such lands. It is likely that for at least 20 years the same type of housing will be perpetuated if we do not intervene through social integration and education programs. The chances are that the younger generations of teenagers, if they go through a process of re-education, will be able to increase the standard of living of the community.

From the point of view of landscaping, this does not present any serious problems, there are invasive plants that must be removed, there are bushes like a hedge that block visibility.

There are not enough walkways and pedestrian connections

SOLUTIONS

Landscaping must first solve the social problem of the area.

We propose the creation of a social center of approximately 300 sqm equipped with 3 classes where various professional courses can take place (mechanics, carpentry, construction, textile manufacturing, music…etc)

An area to set up occasional flea markets or where various donations can be made, especially since in the immediate vicinity there are real estate developments with families with high and very high incomes.

From international practice, for this type of community with very low incomes or no incomes and with problems with the law, the solution of community gardens has proven beneficial. We have identified several areas where this type of garden can be created, where organic vegetables can be produced, which can then be sold right on the spot and the income obtained can be returned to the community. Of course, this type of solution requires the support of the social services of the authorities.

From the survey we conducted, the majority declared that they do not need so many playgrounds, that they would prefer this type of community garden. Therefore, we consider that the space on the island of Plumbuita is more suitable for such a community garden, considering that there are other available spaces that would be better suited for playgrounds, which also require a smaller space.

The island between the two communities of marginalized people as well as the space within the Plumbuita Monastery have the greatest potential to solve this problem.

Making connections/bridges to connect areas with high incomes

Creation of an important central space in the Plumbuita park that will allow the realization of cultural events (music concerts, outdoor projections, minority art festivals) that will attract people from other areas and over time through this mix of activities to increase the cultural level local.

Social centers with market areas, clearing for events and street with steps (arranged in a picturesque vernacular air) can become a pole of attraction in the area.

ȘAULEI VALLEY

PROBLEMS

dirty surface water from the streets flows into the lake

invasive plant species

the area is inaccessible

there is possibility of promiscuity under the highway bridges

SOLUTIONS

We propose the declaration of the area as a protected natural area

We want to propose a study from which the area would become a natural filter for all the debris

sanitization, planting of native vegetation (shrubs, herbaceous plants), setting up and maintaining reproduction ponds, installation of awareness-raising signage (panels), restoration of hibernation areas, unclogging and restoration of temporary ponds.

Making minimal but mandatory connections with the urban fabric to connect adjacent urban areas.

Minimal intervention

Elimination of invasive vegetation

Connecting the former fishing lakes and extending to the lake without the concrete perimeter beam.
