The setting of human activity is bordered by well knowngeographycal landmarks like Mount Tâmpa and the Hill of Caterpillars.

The old settlment bordered by these landmarks has a central and focal point THE MARKETPLACE/THE SQUARE.

The medieval setting is defined by three elements of landmark: THE MARKETPLACE, THE TOWER, THE ENCLOSURES.

The MARKET is the central focal point of the medieval settlement, which it faces next to the Towers.

In a cross section of the relief, the square is arranged between the two slopes, being thus the place where the natural setting can be easily observed.

The market orients the urban setting and is also oriented to the wider natural setting.

The square also mediates between the new town located below and the old settlement that clogs the Scheilor Valley.

Starting from the characteristics of the location, the arrangement of the Market is determined by its specificity as a middle space, the connection between distinct environments.

Exchanges and passages are defining elements of space.

Thus, 2 types of external relations can be distinguished:

1.as an intermediate space to the natural setting

2.as an intermediate space for the urban environment

The towers are both defensive structures and vertical observation point. These towers made possible  the construction of the courtyard buildings as introverted defended structures. The squares are the spaces that interlink the towers and the courtyards.

Interlinks and passageeays are elements that define the space.

We see three tipes of forms build and natural :

The towers are vertical elements that can be defined as 3 types:

Cornertype fortified towers or fortified towers within the defencewallstructure, Gateways or Representative structures.

The towers are part of  defensive constructions  and public buildins but they present themselves with a more distinct structures and shiluettes.

Texture and colour is white paint and the ceramic tiles roof.

The squared plan that extrudes itself as a vertical structures is finished of by its rahter pointy roof.

The towers have a robust and auster image with minimal windows.

The courtyards are an everpresent structure within the old cityscape.

There form and dimensions  varies from the long and narrow  to more wide and vast courtyard.

These enclusures are the place where the private place is separated from the public setting of the old merchant town. Courtyards rearange the space towards the interior.

Within the same hight they define  continouse street views that are from time to time interlinked with public spaces trhough passageways .

The courtyard are masive elements of this scenary.

The public squares is that place that interlinks the towers and the enclosure.

The Council Square is the central square of the old city. Other public spaces are interlinked with it but with lesser dominance within the cityscape.

The Square si well over 10000 sq meters while the other townsquare can reach 2000 sqmeters. These squares come in variouse forms and shapes as the result of an organic growth of the old city.

Shifting  marketplace

The vivacity of the  Square is actually the historical inheritance of the place. A place where the merchant trade was done. One can still scence it today. The merchant market of old time is today the place of interaction, meetings and gatherings.

The packing and unpacking of things as a proces developed in time in the key element of the place.

This result a living space, a form in movement that mark the place.

Vehicles unloading at the fair, large public events and other seasonal activities show a highly uman interactions and an  multifunctional space.

Diferenttipes of trade were split up in rows around the marketplace.

Our proposal seeks to  maintain the dynamic equilibrium model by spatial modularity.

All proposa will fit in the pavement grid.

Bottom

Functional versatility on a repetitive structure based on a simple module – unique script – precisely defined is the optimal way to process a large public space

Shapeing the square on a parametric  pattern generates a fluid surface.

Astfelunitatescriptica (dealtfelprezentasi in caroiajulpietei) impartesicofigureazafuctional forma spatiala.

A large public space subject to a simple rule – the smallest place.

New structures can be mantled and unmatled within the city Square within multiple configurations for diferent events.

A new setting for the square designed to fit in a square that divedes the Square.

The courtyard shifting structure change the dinamic and general scape of the place.

So we show a  maximum annual load in the Town Square on highlight sesons.

Right

The approach of the project aims at reconstructing the historical process of building the spaceby assembling the elementary constructive typologies (tower – enclosures – market) in removable temporary forms.

Reconstruction of some galleries in the market space (even temporary) in the form of enclosures with openspaced floors, or planted enclosures, with reference to the commercial galleries existing in the past arranged on the ground floor of the buildings.

Evaluation of the vegetal element and the presence of water as a possible participant in the strongly anthropized space.

Reconcidering the views in the market, especially those to Council House, but also at the environment.

We seek to further emphasise the pedestrian routs within the square and marketplace.

Marking the favorite gathering place of people – center of gravity of the market.

The new scenograficseting of the marketplace is reoriented  with the Town Hall as the new focal point.

Open spaces that reversibly subdivide the large market will determine a new perception of the landmark construction and will determine a set of open spaces with a high dynamics.

Tower-Courtyard-Square

The tower – the  vertical element that thrones above the space.

Courtyards – act as element that reorganise the vast space.

The squares – interlink the towers with the courtyard as a whole.

All of them shares  the same modular division – the market rule – the smallest operational unit.

Towers

the SITE

In the general urban framework, the first typology of spaces noticed are the towers that orient and subordinate the space.

Along with enclosures and squares, they make up the urban setting.

3 structures will be placed in the Council Square, taking over the silhouette and the role of the urban towers.

These are the most visible elements in space.

They will be arranged at the main entrances to the Square in the areas of wide visibility so as to constitute a marking of the space.

The towers – are arranged in relation to the Council House – around it reorienting the general space of the square towards it.

Their role is both in itself – as urban markings – and in generating intermediate but distinct spaces between them and the Council House.

Structure

he towers are objects of reversible architecture and with a pronounced silhouette.

They will be raised from metal frames that fit into a 4×4 m square and will rise to the general cornice of the buildings.

The impact on the pavement surface is minimal: 4 slender legs tied at the top to a flat surface. These will not impede pedestrian traffic in space, but on the contrary, will mark the favorite routes of movement.

The vertical metal structures will be design elements on their own.

They will also support the activities that will take place in the market.

Various art and design installations with a cultural and community role will be mounted on these structures.

Their image is determined by the simple metal structure.

DESIGN

The vertical metal structures will be design elements.

They will  support the activities that will in the Square and will announce the main urban events. Art installations with a cultural and community purpose will be mounted on them.

These are simple metal structures.

They will act as projection screen of the Square and city cultural life.

Surface material will promote the event.

Inveliereastructurilorvaanuntaactivitateaspatiului.

The metal structure are design as part of the lighting system of the Square.

Events Announcer

a. The Junii Downhill Event , an ancient colourful horseback parade that passes the square in the springtime

 b. Medieval fest  scenography

c. Fish market and others

d. Recycling campaign – use the metal structure a s

recycled material artwork glass – plastic – metal waste

e. Outdoor Activities suport

– trekking event and winter sports

f.Lighting structure for Christmas Holidays and Golden Stag Festival – a popular annualy song contest.

The installation details and their iconography will be elements of professional and public debate.

Covering materials can be textile, mental, plastic, wood, light design based on cultural, aesthetic and community arguments.

The material and the way of editing will be the cultural publicity of the event.

At the same time, these structures will function as permanent luminaires in the Market side of the public lighting system.

The tall sturcture will lighten the Square in the night and in the winter holidays.

Courtyard

LOCATION

The scaffolding are temporary structures set into place upon the arrival of a new activity.

Schafoldings are lightweight constructions that hoast events within diferent timespan. Scafoldings are covered and shaded from wether.

Scaffolding are matled and dematled as hoast for a certain event.

Manteling and unmatelinig is a fast proces within the marketplace.

Scaffoldings act as a temporary shell for events protecting from weather contintions such as rain or exccesiv heat.

The main intent is for the schaffoldings to re-enact the courtyard  but it can be placed in other configurations aswell : isolated groups or even rows as the historical rows The Wheat Row between the 2 metalic tower structures.

Schafoldings are the hoast for public events : local fairs, exhibitions, cultural festivals ,comunity events ,trades, art instalations, public speaking ,public gatherings, small concerts,s mall public theathre event.

Rapid mantle and dis-matle of schafoldings is esential for the overall impact and ease of reconfiguration of the marketplace.

THE SET

Schafolding and tower structures are elements of The Set .

The new elements are ment as an emphasis for the Town Hall building orienting many viewports toword it.

They create passageways towords the townhall, having an ongoing refresh rate of design that keep the marketplace a vivant and interesting space.

AN EVENT SPACE that is signaled by the everchangin design of the schafoldings.

Public toilets are placed with discretion in the back of trees as green courtyards.

Existing jardinieres are replaced by trees and an old place of vegetations is reclaimed.

Planting of trees is done by puntual holes in the slab.

Maple tree and hornbeam will be placed within the space. They will be of small and medium size. Just a few of biger size will be placed.

The planted spaces are to convey a place of shelter within hot summertime.

The Square

CROSSING

The Square is the center of old city whit its own content.

Bordered by the surownding buildings it hostes the centerpiece Townhallbuilding. The space around it is not cleary organized.

The proposal is keen on  passageways that interlink spaces outside the square.Italsow creates viewports toword the townhall.

Rearangement of the limestone surface through linked ramps aim a better permeability of the space.Converting steps into ramps leads to an easy crossing.

The current water well is a central focal point and the widest space within the Square. This is the view from where one can see Tampa Hill.

The waterwall remains in place but new pedestrian crossway is set in place. A new open gutter links the Black Curch with Republic Street.Few fountains are placed on the watherway.

Urban furniture location aim for the best views.

A panoramic deck is placed near Muresanilor Street whit a wide view to the Council House and to Mount Tampa.

Siting bench are placed to give a good perspective. The bench have no backrest and wider seats for easy rest.

The lighting poles border the Square. Diagonal crossing  between Black Church and EnescuPassway is marked by light too.

Complementary to the urban furniture elements the proposal aims to put in place  statues of cultural heritage.

Considering the old name and coat of arms of the city KRONSTADT –  THE CITY OF THE CROWN a new sculptural element will pe place slightly to the west near the Townhall entrance –  King MICHAEL the 1st on the trone.

Another statue is a tribute to Queen MARY as she was one of the main leaders of the time that proposed BRASOV as the capital of the kingdomn. The statue will be representing The Queen as a war nurse as rememberence of the fact that he personally took care of wonded soldiers in time of conflict .

Public transporatation and bike track will be placed on Muresanilor Street. Two new pedestrian crossings will be placed on the northern corners of the Square replaceing the current one. A bike rental point will be placed near Town Hall building.

The jardiniers are replaced by trees.Trees act as a green courtyad for existind public restrooms.New toilet will be placed at the north of the Town Hall.

Current pavement will be reused.
